Don Bates Senior Counselor

Don Bates brings more than 30 years of high-level corporate, agency and not-for-profit public relations experience to SGP. His areas of specialization include strategic PR planning and management. “I like to help agencies grow more business and make more money by thinking bigger and by taking advantage of mutually beneficial alliances and opportunities,” he says.   Don is also an expert in the use of new technology for PR and marketing purposes. He believes small to mid-size agencies that lead in the use of social media will become inviting targets in the years ahead for larger, acquisition-driven organizations.

Before entering PR, Don was a news reporter and then held executive positions with Western Electric (part of AT&T), McDonnell Douglas and other companies and organizations. He has served on the boards of many PR organizations, including the prestigious U.S.-based Institute for Public Relations.   Don was executive vice president and COO of Sumner Rider & Associates, the international PR firm. In 1982 he founded his own agency, The Bates Company, Inc., which he ran for twelve years.

He has also taught PR and marketing courses at several universities and is a consultant on PR planning and management software. Don joined George Washington University in 2007 where he helped to establish its Strategic Public Relations Master’s Degree and Graduate Certificate Programs in the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM). Currently, he is a writing instructor and clinical assistant professor in New York University’s graduate program in public relations and corporate communications.
Bill Doescher Senior Associate

Bill brings an international corporate communications perspective, having spent over 40 years within corporations and acting as a consultant to those entities. Doescher was Senior Vice President & Chief Communications at Dun & Bradstreet where he worked for seven CEOs.

He formed the Doescher Group Ltd in 2000, which provides counsel to senior-level clients and implements approved strategic plans in the areas of marketing, communications and executive search management. Doescher is considered an industry leader in the PR field, and has been actively involved in a number of communications and public relations organizations, including the PR Coalition that in 2007 held a private sector summit on public diplomacy with the U.S. Department of State.  A former president of Public Relations Society of America's Foundation, Doescher has been an adjunct professor and lecturer at a number of universities, including the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and Columbia University.
Jennifer A.K. Schafer Casani Senior Associate

Jennifer possesses a multi-disciplined business operations background, including experience in business development, international and domestic contract negotiations, and marketing. Casani's diverse skill-set was proven at firms such as SAIC, Lockheed Martin, GUESS?, Inc., and Gould and Company. She has lived and worked in Hawaii, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Virginia and Colorado.

Casani holds a Master’s in Business Administration degree from The George Washington University. Based in the Denver metropolitan area, Casani will leverage her creative and business instincts to serve consulting and M&A clients in the Rocky Mountain and East Coast regions.

Barbara brings a global vision to public relations, having spent a career advising PR agencies and multinational corporations on international communications. Burns was instrumental in building a network of overseas public relations firms through acquisition for Grey Advertising.

She was also active in creating an international network of agencies for Ruder Finn. burns established Barbara Burns & Associates (BB&A), an international PR consultancy in New York City, in 1990.

In her practice, she has been a matchmaker between public relations agencies and between agencies and clients in many different cultures. She is the 2001 recipient of the Public Relations Society of American’s Atlas Award for Lifetime Achievement in International Public Relations.

Peter Heymann Senior Associate

Pete brings an extremely diverse background in marketing and marketing communications to the SGP team. He has had a business development business, Peter Heymann Associates, helping marketing communications agencies grow and develop their businesses. Pete also served several marketing communications firms in senior management positions. He ran his own "virtual" sales promotion agency for over six years, called The Marketing Alliance.

In addition, he has client-side experience with Olin Corporation and Coleco Industries (including the launch of Cabbage Patch Kids) and in non-profit work with a community organizing and social justice agency serving the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York. From toys, sporting goods, cereals, dog biscuits, pool chemicals and financial services to HBA products, computers, mouthwash, pharmaceuticals and OTC products, Pete has executed marketing communications and advertising programs that "move the goods."

Pete has also worked extensively in the not-for-profit arena in recent years, matching non-profit organizations with the right marketing communications firms to support their important work. Pete's primary goal has been to match marketing decision-makers with the right marketing communications resources to solve their marketing challenges. He thoroughly enjoys bringing the right people and resources together to create dynamic marketing communications.
